Trends in Video Surveillance are
Driving Storage

The Continuous Evolution of Resolution: Increases in camera resolution are growing as improved clarity delivers immediate benefits for both acute and moderate risk events. The better the clarity, the lower the risk of the image being unusable. The down side is that simply moving from CIF to VGA/4CIF quality images can result in a 400% or more increase in storage costs at equal retention times.

The Contention with Retention: It is generally agreed that when it comes to video images, the longer you keep an image, the less risk you have. With today’s regulatory requirements, it is not only a prudent business decision to increase retention times of stored video for internal business drivers and risk reduction, but in some cases a mandate by the government or industry oversight body is driving video retention. Video storage costs can be dramatically impacted by increases in resolution and retention.
